Resource Guarding

Understanding and Managing One of the Most Misunderstood Behaviours in Dogs

What Is Resource Guarding?

Resource guarding is when a dog protects something they value — food, toys, a resting spot, even a person — by growling, snapping, or biting when approached. It's one of the most misunderstood and mishandled behaviours in dogs, and the most common responses owners try — taking things away, punishing the growl — almost always make it worse.

The growl is communication. It's the dog's way of saying they're uncomfortable. Removing that warning doesn't remove the discomfort — it removes the warning.

This session is dedicated entirely to resource guarding. It is a separate issue from reactivity and fear, and it requires its own specific, careful approach.

What the Session Covers

Why Dogs Guard

The evolutionary and emotional basis for resource guarding — why it's completely normal dog behaviour, and what that means for how we address it.

What Makes It Worse

The most common owner responses that unintentionally escalate guarding — and why understanding these is just as important as learning what to do instead.

Safe Management

Practical strategies for immediately reducing risk in the home — how to restructure feeding, access to resources, and interactions to prevent guarding incidents.

Trade and Swap Techniques

Teaching your dog that someone approaching their valued item is a good thing — building genuine cooperation rather than compliance through force.

Multi-Dog Households

If guarding is happening between dogs in your home, this session covers the specific dynamics involved and how to manage them safely.

A Plan to Take Home

You leave with a clear, written plan — what to do, what to avoid, and how to measure progress over the coming weeks.

A Note on Safety

Resource guarding can escalate to biting if handled incorrectly. This session is designed to give you a safe, structured framework — but if your dog has already bitten, please call Darren before registering so the situation can be discussed directly.

Darren's training book ($95) is recommended alongside this session — it provides the full reference material to work from at home, which is where most of the real progress happens.
