Getting Started
The simplest first step is to complete the registration form. Darren will be in touch within 24 hours to discuss your dog's situation and recommend the most appropriate programme. Alternatively, you are welcome to call directly on 0429 008 000 to have a conversation before you commit to anything.
If you are unsure, select "Not sure — I'd like Darren's advice" on the registration form and describe your situation. Darren will review your information and recommend the most appropriate starting point. There is no obligation and no pressure — the aim is simply to understand your dog's needs and point you in the right direction.
Dogs can begin basic training as early as 8 weeks of age. Early socialisation and foundation skills are strongly encouraged. However, it is never too late — adult and senior dogs are equally capable of learning new behaviours. The approach and expectations may differ depending on age and history, but learning does not stop.
For in-person sessions, bring your dog on a secure lead, proof of current vaccination if requested, and high-value treats your dog enjoys. Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe footwear. Darren will advise on any specific equipment prior to your session. For online sessions, all you need is a device with a camera and a stable internet connection.
Training Philosophy & Methods
Darren uses a balanced training approach — drawing on both positive reinforcement and clear, fair communication. This means rewarding desired behaviours consistently while also providing clear information about what is not acceptable. The tools and techniques used depend entirely on the dog, the situation, and the goals. The focus is always on what works for that individual dog and produces lasting, real-world results.
Darren's approach prioritises clear communication, not force. That said, a truly balanced approach acknowledges that effective training may include both motivational techniques and, where appropriate, calm, proportionate consequences for unwanted behaviours. The goal is always a confident, well-adjusted dog — not a fearful or suppressed one. If you have specific questions about methods, Darren is happy to discuss them openly before you book.
Yes. E-collar training is available as a specialised programme for appropriate candidates. E-collars are used humanely, at very low levels, and only after foundational obedience is established. They are a specific tool for specific situations — off-leash reliability, chasing, or persistent nuisance behaviours that have not responded to other approaches. See the E-Collar Training page for full details.
This depends on the dog, the behaviour being addressed, the owner's consistency at home, and the complexity of the issue. Some behaviours show improvement within the first one or two sessions. More complex behaviour modification — such as aggression or severe anxiety — can take many weeks or months of consistent work. Darren will give you realistic expectations based on your specific situation from the outset.
Yes. The idea that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks is a myth. Adult and senior dogs are perfectly capable of learning — in some cases they are easier to train than puppies because they have better focus and impulse control. Age alone is not a barrier to effective training.

Yes. Behaviour modification for aggression and high-risk behaviours is a core part of what Darren does. However, you must fully disclose your dog's behaviour history, including any bite incidents, on the registration form. Dogs with significant aggression histories are generally seen in private sessions rather than group settings.
Yes — all dogs must be on a secure lead at all times unless specifically instructed otherwise by Darren. In some cases, a muzzle may be required. Darren will advise if this applies to your dog.
Children are welcome to attend. However, you are responsible for their safety and behaviour at all times. Please mention if you intend to bring children when booking.
E-Collar Training
No — not when used correctly. Modern e-collars operate at very low levels of stimulation that dogs experience as a mild sensation rather than pain. The key is correct use: the right working level, introduced properly, in the context of clear and fair communication. In Darren's hands, e-collar training is a humane, effective approach used only where appropriate.
Most dogs with solid foundational obedience are suitable candidates. Dogs with severe anxiety, fearfulness, or certain medical conditions may not be appropriate. An initial consultation will assess your dog before any decision is made. Darren will not proceed if it is not in your dog's best interest.
Yes. E-collar training requires that your dog already understands the behaviours being asked — sit, drop, recall, and walking on lead as a minimum. The e-collar reinforces clear communication; it does not replace teaching. If your dog lacks these foundations, Darren will recommend a foundational programme first.
Online Sessions
Online sessions are highly effective for assessment, consultation, training plan development, and coaching — particularly when you have video of your dog's behaviour to share. Many clients find that a combination of online and in-person sessions works very well.
Online sessions are conducted via Zoom, FaceTime, or Google Meet — whichever works best for you. Darren will send you a link prior to the session. A smartphone is ideal as it allows you to move around and show your dog's environment.
Yes, and it is strongly encouraged. Short video clips of the specific behaviours you want to discuss are extremely useful for assessment. Send them to denmarkdogs@gmail.com ahead of your session.
