Focus Heeling

Drive-based, structured heeling built on engagement, alignment, and clarity — not corrections

What Is Focus Heeling?

Focus heeling is not about your dog plodding along beside you on a tight lead. It is about a dog that moves with you — engaged, attentive, and willing — because the work itself has become meaningful to them. The heel position becomes something the dog seeks, not something imposed on them through pressure or repetition alone.

This class teaches you the mechanics and timing to make that happen. You will learn how to build genuine engagement, how to use your dog's natural drive as a training tool, and how to develop a heel that holds up in the real world — on the street, at the park, in town.

Trained by STSK9™

Darren has completed training through STSK9™, an internationally recognised dog training organisation founded by Nino Drowaert — a former police K9 instructor and team leader with nearly two decades of experience working with elite handlers across law enforcement, special forces, and professional dog sport.

The STSK9™ system is built around clarity, handler mechanics, and instinct-based engagement. Its Heeling Styles™ framework breaks the art of heeling into structured, repeatable phases that develop precision, rhythm, and drive — without relying on leash corrections, forced eye contact, or pressure-based shortcuts. STSK9™ courses include a certificate of completion, confirming that Darren has covered this methodology in full.

This training adds a new dimension to Darren's already extensive background — combining internationally developed heeling methodology with over 30 years of practical, hands-on experience working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments across the Great Southern region.

"Focus heeling is not a trick. It is a process you and your dog grow through together — step by step — until the picture becomes effortless and natural."

— STSK9™ Method

What You Will Learn

Structured skills for both handler and dog

Focus & Engagement

Learn how to build and sustain your dog's attention without forcing it. Engagement that comes from drive is far more reliable than engagement that comes from compliance.

Heeling Positions

Develop the standard heel position alongside variations — including contact heeling and middle heel — so your dog understands exactly where to be and why.

Drive & Energy Management

High energy is an asset, not a problem. You will learn how to channel your dog's natural drive into the heel rather than fighting against it.

Handler Mechanics

Your movement, timing, and body language shape your dog's performance as much as any cue. This class gives equal attention to what you are doing and why it matters.

Real-World Transfer

Skills built in training must hold up in the real world. You will learn how to generalise your dog's heeling into everyday environments — streets, parks, and public spaces.

Progressive Complexity

Each class builds on the last. The approach is phased — clarity first, then precision, then real-world application — so both you and your dog are always working at the right level.

Who Is This Class For?

Focus heeling suits a wide range of dogs and handlers. If your dog already has basic obedience and you want to take their lead work to the next level, this class is the right step. It is equally well-suited to handlers who have tried conventional heeling methods and found them flat — dogs going through the motions rather than genuinely engaged.

High-drive dogs in particular tend to respond exceptionally well to this approach. Rather than suppressing energy, the class teaches you how to harness it. That said, dogs of any breed and energy level are welcome, provided they can work in a small group setting.

Some prior obedience foundation is recommended. If you are unsure whether your dog is ready, contact Darren before registering.
