Fear Training

A Dedicated Session for Dogs Whose Behaviour is Driven by Fear

Fear and Reactivity Are Not the Same Thing

Many people assume a dog that lunges, barks, or snaps is being aggressive or reactive. But fear is frequently the root cause — and treating fear with the same approach used for reactivity can make things significantly worse.

A fearful dog isn't trying to dominate or misbehave. They are overwhelmed, and their behaviour is a response to that overwhelm. This session is designed specifically for that dog.

What the Session Covers

The Science of Fear

Understanding what fear actually is — physiologically and behaviourally — and why so many common responses from owners unintentionally make it worse.

Reading Your Dog

Learning to recognise the early, subtle signals of fear before they escalate. This skill alone changes how you respond and prevents a great deal of stress.

Creating Safety

How to be your dog's advocate — how to structure their environment, their social exposure, and their daily routine to reduce fear over time.

Desensitisation Techniques

Practical, structured methods for gradually changing your dog's emotional response to whatever they fear — done at their pace, not ours.

Counter-Conditioning

Building new, positive associations with previously frightening situations, people, or stimuli — the foundation of lasting behaviour change.

A Plan to Take Home

A clear, individualised plan for what to do next — so progress continues after the session, not just during it.

Which Session is Right for My Dog?

Fear, reactivity, and resource guarding are distinct issues that each require a specific approach. If you're not sure which applies to your dog, call Darren before registering — it's worth getting right from the start.

Darren's training book ($95) is also recommended as a companion resource, giving you the full background in writing to work from at home.
